Escape the world at Pranavam, a plantation stay in Wayanad

We’re writing about a couple of home stays and plantation stays this month. If you’re ever visiting Wayanad, then these are some options. Of course, there are many more, but these are the ones we’ve personally visited and experienced and we’re sure you’ll have a lovely stay too.

Located in a quiet village of Pozuthana, the Pranavam plantation stay is run by Mr Ravindran K and his wife Rama. As you climb up a flight of stairs (covered with a carpet of green moss and fringed by bushes and trees), you feel you’re entering some kind of paradise.

Suddenly, as you heave yourself over the last step, you see before you a house, built in the Kerala style of architecture, with a verandah in front. This is the main house where Mr Ravindran and his wife reside. This is also where all your meals get served.

To the right of the house is a new construction, at a slight elevation and there are 4 rooms that have been built in a duplex style, with adjoining balconies to sit and enjoy the view of the trees and the plantation around. The rooms are large and roomy for double occupancy, but will easily fit 3 people (with an additional bed). From here, you can admire the view, drink your chai or generally relax with a book.

At the main house, do have a chat with Mr Ravindran as he has a lot of interesting stories about how he started (he was one of the first to start the “home stay” concept in this region). There are many more now he says. But rather than considering them as competition, he feels there is room for everyone to thrive.

Besides the plantation walk, which the young Anwar, who looks after the property will take you on; there are also different activities you can indulge in. There is a longer walk to a stream, ending in a natural pool. If you don’t mind tadpoles and members of the water family, then you can also take a dip in the cool waters. After lunch there are various options to choose from but bamboo rafting is a nice and lazy option since someone else does all the hard work. What’s not to like here? And this is after a heavy lunch. The whole area is quite scenic and there are many walking trails.

Pranavam gives you a tranquil and peaceful retreat from the busy world. Step back, relax, indulge in a Kerala sadya meal, a delicious multi-course traditional fare cooked up by the lady of the house. Listen to chirping of the birds from your sit-out or go on a long walk.

And of course, if you want any adventurous activities after all those calories you pile up, MuddyBoots is just a phone call away. From rafting, cycling through the plantations, trekking up Chembra, we’re happy to customize your holiday once you’re in Wayanad.

Pranavam can be reached via overnight buses from Bangalore. You need to get down at Kalpetta. If you ask the conductor sweetly, he might agree to drop you at Vythiri (for an additional cost). Rickshaws are usually hanging around and charge around Rs 100 for a trip from Vythiri to Pozuthana.
